Silk, Lace & Videotape (Blaze, 26)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (February, 2002)

tape yourself and he will review
HOT! HOT! THIS REALLY WAS SO SENSUAL AND SO REAL FOR ME. I DATED
THIS MAN. HE WAS READY AND ALL IT TOOK WAS THAT LITTLE TAPE OF HERS TO GET ALL THE STORY ON ITS WAY. FUN TO READ AND HAS A MYSTERY TO BOOT.

Scintillating! Very highly recommended
It's amazing the trouble Detective Duke Rawlins can into with silk, lace and videotape. And it all started so simply. The New York Police force detective stakes out suspected drug smuggler Victor Gallaghar. By association, the police also have his high society girlfriend Amanda Matthews in their files. As Duke makes his move, Amanda arrives with incredibly ... legs and feet swathed in pink, peaking enticingly from beneath her trench coat. Her picture had enough allure for Duke, and the thing kicks his libido into overdrive.

Duke accompanies her in the elevator to the tenth floor, where he pretends coincidence as they both knock at the same door. Plans go awry, however, when a lipstick smeared bimbo in a man's bathrobe answers the door. Duke holds Amanda to question last, leaving squirming. After Amanda leaves, Duke finds her videotape. It's not until he views it the following day at the station, thinking it might prove to be evidence in his case against Victor, that Duke realizes the beautiful vision before him yesterday was naked beneath her coat.

Instead of her planned seduction, however, Amanda sits through some bimbo's questioning, her now ex-boyfriend's arrest, and her own questioning -- embarrassingly aware that she's clad in nothing but a trench coat. Terrified she's going to be caught and arrested for inadvertent flasher charges, Amanda struggles to keep her coat carefully arranged and promises she'll give up her desire to live a little if she can only go back to her anonymous, but respectable, existence.

Joanne Rock creates a dynamic, scintillating tale of romance and chemistry in SILK, LACE & VIDEOTAPE. She's a princess, and he's nothing but a frog from the wrong side of the pond. She's a suspect, and he's a cop. She's fabulously sexy, and he can't resist. The thrills and teasing quickly consummate in a fantastically heated encounter that leaves them both stunned. After all, it's supposed to be just about sex. But when one's entire world is rocked, it's no longer just about sex. Duke proves himself a typical male in that he's not got a clue how to cope. With emotional challenges added to the difficulties presented by their disparate backgrounds, these character's motivations are convincing and realistic. Very highly recommended.

Hotter Than Fire!
SILK, LACE, & VIDEOTAPE is hot! From the start with Amanda Matthews meeting sexy Detective Duke Rawlins! Amanda was going to meet her boyfriend and give him a little surprise when she was the one who got the surprise. Then Duke took her in for questioning, he got a surprise tape with some secrets Amanda had been keeping hidden.

From there, Amanda went back to her business of designing and Duke back to his detective work but the images of the tape stuck in his mind. When he visited her to give back the tape, he propositioned her for a night of pleasure out on the town. One night turned into heat, sweat, and love in bed with each other. Trying to take down the bad guys, Duke juggled his duty with his emotions and growing love for Amanda. Amanda, on the other hand, juggled her loyalty with her love for Duke.

Throughout this book I was thinking how hot it was and how much steam it created. I love the emotions Ms. Rock created with the characters. I especially enjoyed the tug of emotions that played between Amanda and Duke. I wanted my very own Duke! Ms. Rock made a book of sex, love, and attraction all in one - good going!

Stone Crusade: A Historical Guide to Bouldering in America (The American Alpine Book Series)

Good book, bad binding
This book is fantastic. If you like bouldering and John Sherman's humorous tales you will enjoy this book.

The SOFT COVER BINDING FALLS APART after one or two openings. Of three people I know with the soft cover, all three have fallen apart. BUY THE HARD COVER VERSION!

Excellent.
It reads as a guidebook, a history, and as literature. Sherman writes with surprising grace and introspection about the sport. Nice profiles of the locals at different areas, too. And I was relieved to see no reference to the finest, and apparently still secret, problem at Carderock, MD.

This book is a must have classic for any climber.
Stone Crusade is THE book of bouldering and the history of the sport in the USA. John Sherman's witty and irreverent writing style and his artistic photographic skill capture the true feeling of the sport across the entire country. A guide book, history lesson, and entertainment all rolled into one. You will want to hit the road on your own Stone Crusade.

VH1 Rock Stars Encyclopedia
Published in Paperback by DK Publishing (October, 1999)
Authors: Dafydd Rees, Luke Crampton, and Dafydd Q Encyclopedia of Rock Stars Rees
Average review score:

Indispensable Book for Rock Fans!
We have gone through two previous editions of Crampton and Rees' exhaustive work (prior to the VH1 endorsement) in our household and will probably be buying this edition in the near future.

"Rock Stars Encyclopedia" contains entries on most of the major (and several minor) rock stars and acts, including time lines charting events in their respective careers such as personnel changes, deaths, album releases, single releases, and major concerts. I have seen one or two minor errors in the previous editions, yet the authors are kind enough to ask readers to submit corrections if any errors are seen in the text. Don't expect to be doing so however because these guys are right about 99.9% of the time.

This book is frequently resorted to as the final say in arguments between me and my son, a virtual expert in the field. It is invaluable to afficianados of modern music. I'd give this book 10 stars if I possibly could...it's that good!

A lot went into this DETAILED yet easy to reference gem!
I will keep this short. This is an excellent book, especially for those who may be aspiring music journalists like myself. For example, this book had more information about the late Donny Hathaway than any other work I've come across. When I flipped through it at my local bookstore and saw how big & detailed their Donny Hathaway section was, I was sold.

Refreshingly, this encyclopedia features a healthy balance of American and European popular acts, ultimately exposing you to many artists that you may have never heard of. Okay, I will concede that you may not find the most 'underground' musicicians in here, but hey - I was stunned to find the Brit pop/R&B group 'Five Star' in here. But then again - it's over 1000 pages - with pictures!

I have one question though - how could they forget Tony Toni Tone? They are one of the most influential soul/R&B BANDS (they played instruments) to come out of the 1980s and 1990s! But other than that major slip-up, this book will have a 95% chance of having what you're looking for, and those are pretty good odds if you ask me!

Very Well Put together Book
Vh1 does a Fantastic Job Here with this Book.Lots of Interesting Information&Very Well Detailed.it makes Sense since VH1 is alot more focused On Music than MTV Nowadays. It's A Great Read For The Music Lover.

What'd I Say: The Atlantic Story
Published in Hardcover by Welcome Rain (15 June, 2001)
Author: Ahmet Ertegun
Average review score:

Must Have!!
Ahmet Ertegun what a Important figure in the Music Business? the Guy truly knew His stuff at making a label Important.just His Association with Ray Charles&Aretha Franklin alone speaks volumes to me.He had a strong Idea of what He wanted&He got it.in it's Hey Day Atlantic Records was as Important as Any Other Label then or Now.the one thing you get after reading this Book&Hearing the Atlantic Box Set is that Ahmet Ertegun could vibe with anyone.a Must Have.

Indispensable!
I had the supreme honor of working for Atlnatic Records as a promotions Manager in the '70s, so I saw first-hand a lot of what's in this book. I saw it through the label, the artists, radio and retail. And lemme tell you, the book is spot-on accurate. The two words that best describe Atlantic Records are sophisticated and engaged, and those characteristics come top-down from the founder, Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, and through all of his management.

While the book is an amazing account of Atlantic Records, what is more is the indispensable perspective on the music business at large. For anyone even remotely interested in the history of this industry and its artists, this book is vital.

The cost is a bit pricey, but the old saying you get what you pay for has never been more true. The oversized book features fantastic photography and superb quality. I just wish it would have had included a 30-song sampler of the history of Atlantic artists.

This is one big beautiful book
First of all, this book is huge and weighs a ton. That is appropriate for the subject matter, because Atlantic Records is a huge presence in the history of rhythm & blues and rock. Chock full of pictures and commentary, this presents a totally fascinating portrait of Ahmet Ertegun and his record company, including all the great artists associated with Atlantic. From the early days with artists such as Ruth Brown and the Clovers, through the early career of Ray Charles, and on to Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and the incomparable Aretha Franklin, Atlantic Records made its reputation in R&B. Less well known, but hardly less influential, is its presence in the jazz world, thanks to Ahmet's brother Nesuhi. In the late '60's Atlantic expanded into the field of rock with Cream, Led Zeppelin, and, later, the Rolling Stones, and was a major player in art/progressive rock by signing such bands as King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

They could have ended the book in the early '70's, in my opinion, because after corporate buyouts and sellouts, Atlantic's imprint became less distinctive. Face it, Foreigner could have been on any label and it wouldn't have made much difference. Later forays into country music seem very un-Atlantic, to say the least. But during its heyday, there was no label putting out as high a level of quality music as Atlantic records, and this is its fascinating story.

The White Rock: An Exploration of the Inca Heartland
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (06 January, 2003)
Author: Hugh Thomson
Average review score:

Inca Past, Explorations Past, Explorations Present
Where does an explorer go these days? There is no more "terra incognita" on the maps, and ballooning, sailing, or crossing Antarctica are often reduced to webcasted stunts. If you long to go through jungle, battling snakes and mosquitoes, to find previously undiscovered ancient sites, Hugh Thomson can tell you were to go: Peru. In fact, twenty years ago, he was working in a pub, and a drinker there told him a story involving an Inca fortress that had been discovered, but was so poorly documented, it had gotten lost again. "Not only was it a glamorous idea, it was, unlike most of those told in the pub, a true story." Finding that ruin seemed more attractive than continuing to tend bar: "I had nothing to lose. So I went." This is the start of the story of Thomson's _The White Rock: An Exploration of the Inca Heartland_ (Overlook Press). It is no surprise that in this lively and intelligent exploration memoir, Thomson does re-discover the re-lost archeological site, but it is surprising that this is only the first part of the book, not the climax. By the time the book has finished, he has hiked to many lost cities in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, and reviewed the remarkably complicated Inca history all along the way.

Of course the book is full of recountings of mistakes and scares, from embarrassingly split pants to humorous misunderstandings between the gringos and the natives (including a young girl who precipitously falls in love with the author). This is not a how-to manual, but those preparing to explore the area would do well to heed Thomson's words on snakes, guinea pigs, gnats, pack mules, and especially, guides. Much of the book is not just a history of the Incas, but a history of exploration of Inca sites. There are fine summary portraits here of an assortment of strange characters who have trekked some of these paths before Thomson. A prime one was Hiram Bingham, the discoverer of Machu Picchu, who thought erroneously that it was a religious monument to the Virgins of the Sun. This has sparked a lot of New Age nonsense. It was a winter camp for the Inca court, and Thomson's own view of the exalted position of Machu Picchu is simply that the Incas had a fondness, just as we do, for magnificent mountain views.

Thomson's exhilarating and self-deprecatingly humorous account of his own travels vies with the ancient history and modern history revealed here. All are expertly told. Thomson follows a trail of Inca history to the almost forgotten site of Vilcabamba, still unexcavated and obscured by thick vegetation. It was the last remnant of the great Inca Empire. Digressions of descriptions of the modern towns he goes through, and a welcome appreciation of the great Cuzco photographer Martin Chambi, are easy bypaths on the way. The book has excellent maps, a glossary of terms from the Spanish and the local Quechua language, and an genealogical chart of the Inca emperors. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book to put our currently fashionable fascination with Inca sites in a realistic context.

A great read and great fun.
While planning a trip to Peru, I bought a copy of Thomson's book to get a different spin on the place than that offered by the typical guides and histories. I am delighted that I did. Thomson's witty writing stays away from overly PC sentimentality while still demonstrating a deep respect for the culture and the people of the Andes. Thomson also avoids dry academic discourse and gives the reader some insight into the vibrancy of Andean culture and the richness of its history. Although the book will not tell you what hotels to stay in or what time the train leaves for Machu Picchu, I highly recommend it for anyone considering a trip to the region.

A Highly Enjoyable Reading Experience
Any young history student can tell you the story of the Incas. Bedazzled by stories of cities built of stone and overflowing with gold, children dream of hidden treasures in South America. Tales of the conquistadors --- the culture they conquered and the riches they took --- are told throughout the world, inspiring young men and women to leave their homes and venture into the South American mountains. British explorer and documentary filmmaker Hugh Thomson was one of those adventurers.

Lured to Peru by the story of Llactapata, a ruin discovered by noted explorer Hiram Bingham but lost again beneath the vines and trees of Peru's jungle, Thomson and his team embarked upon a journey to rediscover the missing ruin. Accompanied by local guides, Thomson hiked the Inca trail through the Andean Mountains to his destination --- encountering entertaining locals, interesting cuisine, swarms of gnats and the occasional snake. Nearly twenty years after his first excursion, Thomson would return to Peru to resume his studies of the Inca ruins.

THE WHITE ROCK is not only the story of Thomson's explorations, but also the history of the Inca culture and the archaeologists and explorers who have recorded it. Thomson never hesitates to give credit where it is due, a notable contrast to the often overblown egos of explorers. True to documentarian form, Thomson offers an unbiased, honest account of his travels in Peru, highlighting various aspects of its culture, arts and inhabitants. He also points out what he believes are discrepancies in the historical chronicle of the Incas and offers plausible alternatives. A combination of a history text and travel memoir, THE WHITE ROCK offers the reader much more than other books in either of these genres. Thomson's balance of humor and scholarship makes for an enjoyable reading experience, and the forty-five black and white photographs beautifully illustrate the mystical draw of the Incas.

Who Was Eleanor Rigby: And 908 More Questions and Answers About the Beatles
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (November, 1996)
Author: Brandon Toropov
Average review score:

Maybe I'm biased
Maybe I'm biased because I am a contributor to this book, but I found it highly entertaining and informational. Oh, and by the way, Eleanor Rigby's grave wasn't found by Paul McCartney until sometime in the 1980s. Eleanor Rigby is really a combination of Eleanor Bron (an actress in "Help!") and Rigby's stores found all over England.

Very fun!
This book is very good. It is divided in various chapters, each one talking about one disc or year. There are short trivia questions, some are "true or false", others have complete answers. They are divided by numbers (there are 909 questions) and in the end of each chapter there are the answers. There is a nice introduction and in the end, a bibliography (useful for those who want o go deeper into the trivia). I bought it on a trip to New York, and althought I had read about it on Amazon.com, I would have bought it either I hadn't, because its backcover has attractive questions that incite you to buy it. It's a narrow and small book (not a pocketbook, taller), a typical paperback.

what a great book! Amazing, random info...
I have no idea how the author went about researching this book, but the end result is such enjoyable, and interesting reading. Very quick and interesting reading for a fun night with friends(who are interested in the Beatles) or when you only have a few minutes to read some quick interesting tid-bits.

The Story of Limp Bizkit

The limp review
i believe that this book was written really well and tells the backaround of each band member very well. i think that they have done a better job on this book than any other biography on any website around. if you are a hard core limp fan i suggest that you get this book.

A REALLY GREAT BOOK
Whoever said that this book isn't well written is out of their minds. Aside from it being full of information and cool pictures, the thing I liked the most about it was the writing. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to know all about Limp Bizkit. This book is the bomb.

The Best Bokk EVER!
I think that who ever wrote that review on the book of LimpBizkit is stupid . If you buy the book is because you like them and it doesn't matter how bad the writing was because Limp Bizkit will always be the #1 band and the best.

Wingspan: Paul McCartney's Band on the Run
Published in Paperback by Bulfinch Press (October, 2002)
Authors: Paul McCartney and Mark Lewisohn
Average review score:

Glimpses
"Wingspan" is a glossy book of photos for fans, combined with some scraps of comment by McCartney (interviewed, it should be noted, by his own daughter Mary.) It's good to finally get some information about Paul's Wings years. This is obviously Paul making his own case, though he is certainly honest about matters such as his frustration with the band's ever-changing lineup, as well as his 1980 arrest for pot in Japan. Overall, one cannot help but admire the bravely carefree attitude with which Paul formed this new band and made some spotty but often good music. Above all this book is meant to be a tribute to Linda McCartney, a defense of her role in the band, and an inspirational look at how a family man can combine work and play. Personally I would have liked to see more in-depth interviewing by someone more impartial, as well as interviews with other band members, most especially Denny Laine who stayed with Wings through the entire decade but is given rather short text shrift here. But then, I'm grateful for what we get. As Paul comments, Wings wasn't rocket science, it was just making music, and this is a fun, breezy book about a fun band.

Wingspan
As a second generation Beatles fan, I truly loved Wings. It's a shame so little has been written about Paul and his band....until now. While I do wish more details would emerge about Paul's relationship with Denny Laine and Jimmy McCullough, I am grateful for Wingspan (DVD and book). If Linda had lived to help with this project, I believe she would have felt free to recollect both good and not so good times on the road. Because the Beatles legacy is so huge, I feel not enough respect and appreciation is given to Wings' legacy, not even by Paul himself! Perhaps in time, we'll learn more. For now, Wingspan is the best tribute yet.

Lewisohn-McCartney
Has Paul McCartney finally found the writing partner to fill the void created by the breakup of his liaison with John Lennon? If "Wingspan" is anything to go by, then he may well have done so. Mark Lewisohn, the much-celebrated Professor Emeritus of Beatledom, proves himself to be the ideal sidekick to Macca, collaborating with the Great Man on a wonderfully informative book that leaves no stone unturned in its effort to detail every facet of a fascinating period in the life of a multitalented artist. So vivid are the recollections that it's almost as if you're right there with Paul, Linda and their troupe of kids and collaborators. Lennon & McCartney were a legendary team, but Lewisohn & McCartney are a pretty formidable pair in their own "write". They should try working together on some songs...
